Advantages of Using Computers Computers obviously wouldn’t be as popular as they are now if they did not offer advantages over doing tasks manually. Some of these advantages are: Computers can perform calculations much more quickly and accurately than humans. For example, modern computers can perform hundreds of millions of calculations per second. Large amounts of data can be stored in a small amount of space. For example, hundreds of pages worth of text can be stored on a 31⠁„2inch floppy disk. Computers can work continuously and perform repetitive tasks well. Unlike their human counterparts, computers do not get bored or tired. Organization The organizational skills of companies have improved substantially since the 1970s and 1980s due to the use of computers. Years ago, most contact information between clients, including phone numbers and addresses for mailing lists, were kept in files or a Rolodex, which made searching for information time consuming. Today, customer information is easily accessible and updatable and this is far from the only organizational area that s been transformed by computers. Product information, inventory, and descriptions for sales companies are uploaded to computers and placed into databases or on the internet for easy access by customers. Business accounts and invoices are also kept on computers so that a customer service representative is only a few clicks away from aiding clients. Production The all important area of production has also been greatly impacted by computer technology. The viability of most businesses is linked to the ability to produce products quickly and effectively.
